OUR FAVORITE INDIE BRANDS OUT OF ASIA THAT WE THINK YOU SHOULD KNOW.
SGC picks the most coveted indie brands to come out of the Eastern continent.
We’ll start with Li-Ning, the eponymous sportswear brand founded by Chinese Olympic gymnast in 1990. Well known in Asia and underrated outside, we think Li-Ning should be in everyone’s styling books.
SS20 delivers a collection that pays tribute to one of its home country’s most popular competitive sports — ping-pong. The Chinese label was inspired by the ping-pong polo and used this simplistic sporting staple to define the entire collection, utilizing a set of new, ultra-lightweight fabrics for everything from coats and shirts to pants, shorts, and accessories.
Next up is SSAP, who run out of Bangkok and Brooklyn. Established by surfer Mel Sangsomsap, the brand has strong ethics in preserving the environment (especially keeping the oceans clean). SSAP have used traditional Thai dying techniques for indigo denim which they worked into beautiful jackets. You can follow them here.
We’re going to rock the boat and throw in some jewellery here instead of clothing. O Thongthai is relatively new to the scene, but has been seen on Steve Lacy in GQ, and created the orange jewelled pendants for Casablanca SS20. http://othongthai.com
Music collective and clothing-makers Yeti Out shapeshift with their ongoing pop-up parties, garment drops and record releases. They’ve collaborated with Olaf Hussein, Nike, High Snobiety, Obey, Patta and Coach — an impressive list! Shop them here.
